May/June 2018
"Green was the silence, wet was the light, the month of June trembled like a butterfly." — Pablo Neruda
Between the end of one school year and the start of the next, every student risks summer learning loss. On average, two months of reading skills are lost over the summer break, one month of overall learning and 2.6 months of math skills are lost. As can be expected, these outcomes are most severe for a child who is homeless or highly mobile and serve to underscore the important work you have before you this summer. Studies have affirmed that reading four to five books over the summer has a positive impact comparable to summer school enrollment. Now is the time to identify engaging books you and your student can read together over the summer.
Welcome Bisson is Saying Goodbye
Wow! It's hard to believe that it's been over 4 years since my first day and it is with a heavy heart, that I am saying goodbye. Without a doubt, crossing paths with all of YOU, the amazingly compassionate and dedicated Volunteers , has been a highlight of my journey with CEP. I can't thank you all enough for the time you give to the students and families that we serve. Truly appreciated! May our paths cross again someday.
With warmest regards,
Welcome

A Bit About Andrew:
Born and raised in Oakland, Andrew McKleroy has worked in the field of Educational Justice for nearly a decade. This trajectory began with a two years stint as an AmeriCorps tutor and after school instructor at an East Oakland continuation High School and was followed by a stretch as a Project Coordinator at Bay Area Communities Resources (BACR), where he trained and placed AmeriCorps members in high needs communities throughout the Bay Area. Along the way, Andrew started a charity with his wife called Music for Canoa in order to provide much needed instruments and funding to a small music program in his wife’s hometown of Canoa Quebrada in the Northeast of Brazil. Andrew plays guitar and sings in his free time and can be heard at the Cheeseboard Collective twice a month with his Brazilian music project, Zamico. Andrew currently lives in Richmond, CA with his wife and son.

Tutoring Tidbit
As a new tutor for CEP, I was paired with a student who had already been meeting with a tutor regularly. At first I was a little apprehensive about how we would find our own tutoring groove, but the fact that Nancy had already been working with a CEP tutor has been a big help! It definitely made the initial introduction, assessing Nancy’s needs, and scheduling much easier as Nancy and her mother were already familiar with the process (including how to contact Nancy’s teachers). I appreciate the work the previous tutor did to find a learning activity Nancy enjoys. Reading a story out loud and discussing what’s happening along the way has created a strong starting point for us and because of this, Nancy is enthusiastic each time we meet. I look forward to building upon the foundation started by Nancy's previous tutor and helping Nancy continue to improve her reading comprehension. A big thanks to Nancy's previous tutor!
-Michael has been tutoring Nancy since April 2018
