Core Program - One-on-one Academic Support (In-Person & Virtual)

Our core program is our one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for students experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. Volunteers meet with their assigned student(s) weekly for at least one hour. Tutor-student pairs can meet virtually or in-person with Covid safety precautions.

Children's Learning Center (In-Person & Virtual)

CEP staff and volunteers operate a Children's Learning Center at the Family Matters shelter in Oakland, CA. We coordinate indoor and outdoor educational and enrichment activities for our students and facilitate online learning and tutoring for them. The Children' Learning Center is open five days per week.

Weekly Programs (Currently on hold in some locations due to Covid)

Homework Club

At our Homework Clubs, volunteers provide homework support to K - 12th grade students. Homework Clubs occur at shelters and transitional homes at the same time each week. Several volunteers attend each session, with student-to-volunteer ratios as low as possible.

Literacy Club

At our Literacy Clubs, volunteers provide literacy support to K-5th grade students. The focus at Literacy Clubs is on reading with an adult and building literacy skills. Literacy Clubs occur at shelters and transitional homes at the same time each week. Several volunteers attend each session, with student-to-volunteer ratios as low as possible.

Summer Reading Club

At Summer Reading Clubs, volunteers provide literacy support to students by reading with them and playing literacy games during the summer months. Summer Reading Clubs occur at shelters and transitional homes at the same time each week. Several volunteers attend each session, with student-to-volunteer ratios as low as possible.

Computer Club

At Computer Clubs, volunteers provide computer support for students with a focus on building digital literacy skills and comfort using the computer. CEP supplies the laptops for the students. Attendance is limited to six students per Computer Club session.  Computer Clubs occur at shelters and transitional homes at the same time each week. Two to three volunteers attend each session.

Quarterly Programs (Currently on hold in some locations due to Covid)

Family Reading Nights

Family Reading Nights are among our most popular programs. Each two-hour event includes dinner, a read-aloud, literacy games, and a book distribution. Family Reading Nights take place at shelters and transitional homes.

Back to School Nights

Back to School Nights are similar to Family Reading Nights, but have a back-to-school focus designed to get our students excited about the coming school year. Each two-hour event includes dinner, a read-aloud, literacy games, a book distribution, and a backpack and school supplies distribution. Back to School Nights take place at shelters and transitional homes.
